Famed for its single malt whisky, the Dalmore Distillery was founded in 1839 by Alexander Matheson, and is located on the northern shores of the Cromarty Firth, overlooking the Black Isle, in Alness in the Scottish Highlands. A successful entrepreneur, Matheson identified Alness as an ideal place for a distillery, with fertile land to grow golden barley, pure water from Loch Morie and being at sea level so the salt air provides the ideal conditions for maturation.

After construction he immediately leased his new distillery to the Sunderland family, who ran it for 30 years until 1839 when the Mackenzie brothers, Andrew and Charles, who had taken over the running of the distillery until Matheson’s death, purchased the distillery outright. The iconic Dalmore 12 pointed Royal Stag emblem comes directly from the Mackenzie family crest, awarded to a distinct relative after saving King Alexander III of Scotland from a charging stag, and has adorned every bottle of Dalmore whisky since they purchased the famous distillery. The distillery remained under Mackenzie ownership until 1960 when it merged with Whyte and Mackay, and has since gone on to be owned by a wide range of different owners. Despite this, Dalmore has produced some of the most renowned Highland malt whisky, under master blender Richard Paterson, breaking records for the cost of a single bottle.
