Chivas Regal

The Chivas Regal brand, now part of Pernod Ricard, is no doubt one of the most recognisable in the drinks industry, which is no surprise given it’s long history which can be traced back over 200 years to 1801. The Chivas Brothers began with the opening of a grocery store in Aberdeen, selling luxury food and drink to wealthy customers, and being granted a Royal Warrant in 1843 to supply goods to Queen Victoria.

It was during the 1850’s that James Chivas saw a demand for a smoother whisky, with his blending experiments seeing their first blended Scotch whisky launched - the Royal Glen Dee. This was followed by their Royal Strathythan blend in the 1860’s. The Chivas Brothers saw demand for their blends rise rapidly and upon launching in the USA, where the demand for luxury goods was ever increasing, they created their most aged Scotch whisky blend - Chivas Regal. Seagrams, which was once the largest distiller in the world, purchased Chivas Regal in 1949, and the following year bought the Stathisla Distillery, the oldest operating Highland distillery, whose single malt is used in the Chivas Regal blend. Following both Prohibition and World War II, Chivas Regal was relaunched into the US, and quickly became the fashionable brand of the time, drank by Frank Sinatra and the Rat Pack. The original 12 year old blend was later expanded to include an 18 and 25 year old.
