Cardhu

Founded by a one-time whisky smuggler, Cardhu distillery is one with a chequered past and a highly successful present. The distillery was set up in 1824 by John Cumming, who once smuggled whisky illegally. Originally functioning on a seasonal basis, the demand was soon so great for the soft-watered single malts, it moved to a new location where it could triple its original output.

Here it was run by Elizabeth Cumming, John’s daughter-in-law – and was one of the only distilleries ever to be run by a woman for such a long period of time. Cardhu was eventually sold to Johnnie Walker and Sons, manufacturers of the world’s biggest-selling blended whisky, and is now renowned as the spiritual home of Johnnie Walker in Speyside.
