Founded in 1826 and still fully active today, the Benrinnes distillery is famous for its blends and its single malt whiskies. Many people consider the majestic flavours and depths of these spirits to be the holy grail of alcoholic beverages. Benrinnes originally set itself from other distilleries, with an unusual distillation method. The six stills at the venue were used to partially triple-distil the spirit, which is fairly rare for Scottish distilleries.
However, this method was ditched back in 2007, when the team behind Benrinnes switched to the accepted configuration of two wash stills and four spirit stills. Benrinnes is also one of a handful of Scottish distilleries which still uses ‘worm tubs’ to cool vapours and condensed spirit from the running stills. This method was once a common feature in the distillation process, but Benrinnes is one of the only distilleries still opting for this method today.
