Balblair has a murky past, with illicit distilling believed to have taken place for a while before it was originally founded as an official distillery. Officially founded in 1790, this established distillery has been built and rebuilt in numerous locations, but still retains control of its original water source – the Ault Dearg burn.
The water from this burn is renowned as the highest quality, leading to the stunning collection of single malt whiskies that is still in production today. The distillery also has one of the oldest archives in the world of whisky. The first ledger on record dates back to January 25th 1800, and was penned by John Ross, the original founder – it showed the sale of one gallon of whisky for £1.8.0d.
