Auchroisk

A fairly new distillery, this Speyside venue was established in 1974 after Dorie’s Well was discovered to produce water similar in quality to that used by the Glen Spey distillery. Justerini and Brooks, owners of the Glen Spey distillery, saw the opportunity to produce yet more malt whisky, and Auchroisk produced its first ever single malt four years later in 1978.

Whiskies from Auchroisk were initially launched as blending malts, but the quality was so high, many believed it could be sold as single-malt. The blend was still missing something, however, and after a year spent in sherry casks, the whisky developed a more complex flavour and went on sale as a single malt, to rave reviews. Auchroisk also went through a brief period of being named ‘The Singleton’, after Auchroisk (pronounced oh-thrusk) was deemed too difficult for non-Scots to pronounce. However, the name switched back to its traditional Auchroisk in 2001, before they settled on The Singleton of Auchroisk in 2008.
